Tuned In To Music

Reflections from a lifetime

Review: Matt Mays & El Torpedo

Thd album cover pretty much says it all:  Muscle cars, night highways and that girl.  You know which one she is.  Free, dangerous, wild.  You would have done anything – you did do anything.  When you had her it was all about right here, right now, all the time.  Then she was gone.  You never forgot her.   Neither have MM&ET.  The album is a collection of songs that yearn for the girl, the nights and the car set to Crazy Horse style dirty guitars.  Although his songwriting can be ponderous at times, Mays’ is an effective guitar player and his grinding, at times atonally bending guitar licks suit the songs well.  A brief and spooky vocal accompanyment by Kathleen Edwards on “The Plan” is especially effective.  After a while it all begins to sound the same but there are several solid tunes here that will stay on your playlist for awhile especially if you like Crazy Horse & Neil Young style guitar.  The CD comes with a DVD with videos for three of the songs on the album which I haven’t watched.
