Review: Layo & Bushwacka!, Feels Closer

Layo & Bushwacka! are Layo Paskin and Matthew B.  Paskin is co-owner of The End one of the most well known tech-house music clubs in England and Matthew B. is one of the DJs at the club.  So, it comes as no surprise that Feels Closer is a dance-electronica mix.  And it’s, by and large, a good one.  L&B tend to emphasize groove rather than ambiance and when they do they usually provide the goods.  When they go in the opposite direction and focus on ambiance they’re not so successful producing largly forgetable generic background music.  Fortunately they are more about groove than ambiance on Feels Closer.  I’ve always been a sucker for a big fat bass and they put a monster riff out front in the killer “Isn’t This a Lovely Day”.  The track ought to come with a warning label “Committed listeners of rhythm-challenged music may sustain injury when their ass tries to do things it’s never done before.  Caution is advised.”  The track also incorporates samples of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong in surprisingly effective ways.  L&B have a marked ability to incorporate jazz into a dance mix as is also apparent on “Smith Street”.  Too bad they don’t do more of it.   Overall a mixed bag with strengths that more than outweigh its’ weaknesses.
