Tuned In To Music

Reflections from a lifetime

Review: The Damnwells, Air Stereo

The Damnwells are an indie guitar-pop band that will kick your ass with big ringing guitars and sharp lyrics as they do on “Accidental Man”.

I”ll be your accidental man/You’ll be my circumstantial lover/I’m here to ruin all your plans/I’m here to steal you from your mother.

Nice.  They’re not doing anything that hasn’t been done a million times before but they do it well.  If you like guitar pop that traces it’s roots directly back through Teenage Fanclub and Big Star to the early Birds, and I do, there are tunes to enjoy here.  That’s the good news.

The bad news is often, way too often, they sound like all they want in the world is have one of their songs playing during the last two minutes of your favorite TV drama when the director is desperately trying for some kind of emotional crescendo to convince you that the past 45 minutes of drivel were oh so deep.   So we get tunes like “Heartbreaklist”, “Graceless” and “Shiny Brusie” which are as dreadful as they sound.   As guitar-pop rockers they hit the mark.  As Snow Patrol wannabees they ain’t even close.  Too bad they shoot for the latter much more frequently than the former on Air Stereo.
