Tuned In To Music

Reflections from a lifetime

Review: Black Dice, Load Blown

Black Dice are an experimental electronica group out of Brooklyn who produce tracks that may or may not be characterized as “music” depending on how open and flexible your criteria black diceare.  On “Load Blown” they tend to take very simple melodic figures made up up of as few as three notes and repeat them endlessly with complex overlays of rhythmic electronic sound effects.  The sounds they favor tend toward the industrial; it’s telling that as I was writing this and listening on headphones a vacuum cleaner started up in another part of the house and the muted oscillating drone of the machine fit perfectly with the track I was listening to.  The emphasis is on sound, texture and rhythm with a rudimentary, at best, interest in melody and no concern for harmony or conventional song structure.  This is abstract music that demands, but also repays attention.

The overall effect of Black Dice’s sound constructions are not as abrasive as you might expect given the harshness of some of the sound effects and textures they use.  I expect this is because of their use of simple melodic lines and sure grasp of rhythm.  The audience for this type of music is small but if you are interested in well-constructed, rhythm-driven, electronica soundscapes that tend toward industrial sounds and textures you might want to give “Load Blown” a listen.
